Transition - From primary school to secondary school

Choosing the right secondary school is one of the most important decisions you will have to make for your child. Many children find the process of deciding on the right school and leaving their primary school a daunting and worrying time.

Introduction

At Lift Winton we pride ourselves in offering a complete and worry free transition process for all our New Year 7 students. Our aim is to provide as much reassurance and information about the new school year as possible so that each student receives a smooth, happy and worry-free start to the next chapter of their academic life.

During the Summer Term we will visit each primary school to talk to teachers and pupils. These discussions with teachers will help Winton staff to know what levels primary pupils are working at and to identify friendship groups so that they can be accommodated where possible.

The talk to pupils about life in Winton helps them to develop their knowledge of the school. At the end of the talk, there is a question and answer session. This helps to allay any small worries that primary school pupils may have about moving to secondary school.

Additional Transition Support

We are conscious that transition to secondary school will mean different things for different families. Whilst some will want the core information others will need additional support for specific requirements. This is very normal and every child is supported at Winton.

Wellbeing and Student Welfare

We are fortunate to have developed an experienced team of staff who lead our Student Welfare. At Winton Student Welfare is part of our culture. You will find that our community of students, staff and the wider network do a brilliant job in helping your child settle with us.

Alongside this our network of tutors, student ambassadors and the broader school community will do everything to help your child settle in with us.

Special Education Needs

All children are different, and have different needs.  Although your child will be joining a larger school, knowing and understanding our pupils is central to everything we do at Winton.  Before your child joins the school, we liaise closely with our primary colleagues, sharing relevant information and planning additional transition support where needed.

Once at Winton, we have a highly effective Curriculum Support team, and collaborate closely with subject specialists and middle leaders to ensure that pupils' needs are met - whether this is through careful differentiation in class, tailored routines, LSA support or targeted intervention programmes.  Children's aptitudes and difficulties often change over time.  Pupils' reading ages are tested every term, so that we can work with you to support your child's progress, and we use teacher referrals and specialist screening to identify learning needs and plan relevant provision.

View our SEND page for more information

If you would like to raise or ask anything that you cannot answer through these pages of the website then there are two main ways to get the answers you need.

The first one is from when your child’s tutor once they have been allocated.

All staff at Winton are contactable by their initial, surname and the address @liftwinton.org. For example MS Felicity Thorpe-Tracey would be fthorpe-tracey@liftwinton.org

When your tutor is allocated they will be in touch

If you believe you want to give a bit more information please bear in mind we are in regular contact with primary schools. They have shared lots and we are arranging visits for students primaries have identified to us. That said if want to share information or ask for additional guidance to drop the right colleague an email. They will either answer it or signpost you to someone who can.
