As a school, we are always ensuring that our curriculum is relevant, high quality, and is encouraging our students to be curious, engaged and well-rounded thinkers.
The Teaching and Learning team continue to work with departments to ensure that the joy of learning spearheads our teaching. We believe that when students find pleasure and purpose in their studies, they are more motivated to succeed and reach their full potential. In addition to core subjects like English, mathematics, and science, we are proud to offer a wide and diverse range of options to spark students’ interests and develop their talents. Our curriculum offering includes: art, dance, drama, media studies, music, modern foreign languages, history, geography, physical education, religious education, animal care, and various technology disciplines. This rich variety provides students with a breadth of experiences, ensuring they are well-prepared for life beyond Winton, whether they choose to pursue further academic study or apprenticeships.

At Winton, literacy underpins our educational approach, reflecting its vital role in enabling students to access and engage with all areas of the curriculum. Students complete biannual NGRT assessments, which provide valuable insights into reading ability and comprehension. This information supports early identification of need and helps inform targeted interventions aimed at improving reading ages and overall literacy skills. By equipping students with strong literacy foundations, we support their academic progress and help prepare them for successful post-16 pathways.
Likewise, developing our students’ oracy skills, so that they are able to communicate effectively, develop an argument and think critically under pressure is of vital importance. Our commitment to active learning through Winton’s signature strategies is central to developing these skills. Through group work, flipped learning, and meaningful peer discussions, students are encouraged to think critically, collaborate, and express their ideas confidently. These approaches help foster a dynamic and interactive learning environment, where students are active participants in their education and equipped with the skills they need for lifelong success.
The use of online learning platforms such as Sparx Reader, Sparx Maths, Sparx Science and Century Tech forms a foundational part of our approach to independent learning and revision. These tools support students in developing positive study routines, reinforcing key knowledge and skills, and addressing gaps in understanding through personalised tasks. At Winton, regular engagement with these platforms is strongly encouraged as part of students’ wider learning. Consistent use helps students build effective revision habits and supports their preparation for assessments and examinations.
At Winton we want creativity and unbounded thinking to flourish throughout our community. Our co-curricular programme enables pupils to focus on specific interests and to discover their pioneering potential. We want to challenge, guide and support our pupils through outdoor education, charity programmes, and other activities. We ensure they are exposed to a wide range of opportunities and projects that are both meaningful and joyful. Our broad and inclusive co-curricular programme is designed to enrich students’ educational experience beyond the classroom.
The programme includes a strong emphasis on creative and performing arts: including choir, music technology, dance, drama, performing arts and band rehearsals. Sport clubs are also offered: football, basketball, netball, indoor football, gymnastics, table tennis and tennis available across multiple year groups. These activities promote physical wellbeing, teamwork, resilience and healthy competition. Students are also able to take part in enrichment activities such as games clubs, open art sessions, community orchestra, show rehearsals and national theatre connections, supporting creativity, confidence and self-expression.
Most of our activities are open to all students, however others are tailored to specific age groups or target audiences to ensure activities are developmentally appropriate and accessible. The programme is supported by teaching staff and specialist leaders, reflecting Winton’s commitment to providing high-quality experiences that complement classroom learning.
Through our co-curricular offer, we aim to foster well-rounded individuals, encourage wider participation, and support students in developing skills, interests and passions that contribute positively to their personal development and future pathways. Our programme is underpinned by our Extended curriculum Entitlement document which lays out the experiences our students are expected to experience throughout their time at the school.
“At Winton, we believe that every child deserves a curriculum that not only provides academic excellence but also nurtures creativity, resilience, and a love of learning.”
